Survivor of the Atomic Age

1945, oil/canvas, 24" x 30"

The lone survivor of the holocaust adapts to his disordered universe and mind. He believes he is godlike and tries to control again the fragmented solar system by playing an endless game of checkers with it -- in total solitude. When necessary, he retreats into his shell to avoid lethal radiation. A diminished earth revolves around a disconsolate, demented moon, and only the Little Dipper remains in a disintegrating universe. A fiery comet speeds through space to obliterate the useless remnant of the system and to restore celestial normalcy again.
